Apple Store, Birmingham

The requirements

To create Apple’s renowned open plan, minimalist ambiance in its new flagship store, specialist heavy duty propping was required to allow the demolition of key load-bearing walls.

The project presented several complexities, including the preservation of existing columns during the installation of new steelwork below, and adherence to low allowable ground bearing pressure. The main challenge of the project was supporting the 1500kN axial load of the existing column.

Our solution

Utilising an RMD Megashor structure with a bespoke steelwork connection seamlessly diverted the 1500kN load into the propping system, enabling the safe execution of all demolition and permanent works.

With heavy-duty propping, prioritising buildability is paramount during the design phase. Opting for a modular propping system allows the installation of materials in manageable sections, thereby reducing the risks associated with manual handling.

Furthermore, a temporary steel beam grillage was employed to evenly distribute high loads across the existing ground, ensuring compliance with allowable bearing pressures.

This comprehensive solution was delivered safely within the designated programme and budget, constituting an integral component of the principal contractor’s overall project success.
